About Shot Blasting Machine

A shot blasting machine is an industrial surface preparation equipment designed for foundries, fabrication shops, automotive units, and metal-processing industries. Using a high-performance centrifugal blast wheel, it propels steel shot or steel grit at high velocity to quickly remove rust, scale, paint, and surface contaminants while delivering a uniform finish. Ideal for high-volume production, continuous blasting, and efficient metal surface preparation, it helps improve productivity and reduce processing time. Get the right shot blasting machine for your application; request a quote, specifications, and price today.

What Is a Shot Blasting Machine?

This type of blasting machine uses a high-speed centrifugal wheel to fling steel shot or grit at metal components, cleaning rust, scale, and casting sand while also deburring and finishing the surface. This is the key difference from sand blasting: sand blasting relies on an air compressor to propel abrasive through a nozzle, while shot blasting relies on the mechanical force of a spinning wheel; no compressed air is needed for the blasting action itself.

Components are typically loaded onto a rotary table, tumbling belt, or swing table depending on machine type, and cleaned as the wheel throws abrasive continuously while control valves open and close to start and stop the blasting cycle.

How the Shot Blasting Machine Works?

A high-performance centrifugal shot blast wheel throws abrasive media onto workpieces continuously; the wheel itself runs without stopping, and only the abrasive control valve opens or closes to start and stop the blasting cycle. Spent abrasive is transferred by screw conveyor into the elevator boot, elevated to a media separator that segregates usable abrasive from debris, then gravity-fed back down into the wheel for reuse, a closed-loop system that keeps operating costs down.

The wheel assembly's rotor runs on self-lubricated, self-aligning pedestal bearings and is dynamically balanced; wear liners inside the casing (hub side liner, control cage liner, top and end liner) protect the assembly and are replaceable as they wear.

Core Components

  • Shot blast cabinet: heavy-duty mild steel construction with manganese steel wall liners (11–14% manganese, minimum 20mm thick) that absorb abrasive rebound
  • Shot blaster wheel assembly: the centrifugal wheel, rotor, blades, control cage, and impeller that generate blasting force
  • Bucket elevator and media separator: elevates spent abrasive and separates reusable media from debris and worn-out particles
  • Abrasive control valve: an enclosed, noise-reducing valve that modulates abrasive flow to the wheel
  • Job tumbling system: an endless rubber conveyor belt (minimum 500 kg / 10 cubic feet load capacity) that tumbles components for even exposure during blasting
  • Dust collector: fabric bag (minimum 36 tubular filter bags, 700 GSM) or reverse pulse-jet cartridge type, with mechanical shaking to clear accumulated dust.

Types of Shot Blasting Machines

Shot blasting machines are available in different configurations based on workpiece size, shape, production volume, and blasting requirements. Common types include:

  • Tumblast Shot Blasting Machine: Suitable for batch processing of small and medium-sized castings, forgings, and durable components.
  • Hanger Type Blasting Machine: Designed for large, heavy, or complex components that cannot be tumbled. Parts are suspended from hooks or hangers during blasting.
  • Rotary Table Blasting Machine: Uses a rotating table to blast heavy, bulky, or irregular-shaped components that need controlled surface treatment.
  • Rotary Barrel Blasting Machine: Processes multiple small components in a rotating barrel, providing uniform blasting coverage.
  • Conveyor Type Blasting Machine: Moves components continuously through the blasting chamber and is suitable for high-volume production lines.
  • Roller Conveyor Blasting Machine: Used for steel plates, profiles, pipes, beams, and other long or large components requiring continuous surface cleaning.
  • Mesh Belt Blasting Machine: Suitable for smaller or delicate components that require controlled handling during continuous blasting.
  • Spinner Hanger Blasting Machine: Rotates suspended components while abrasive media is projected from blast wheels, providing thorough and uniform surface cleaning.
  • Portable Shot Blasting Machine: Designed for on-site or field applications where equipment needs to be moved between work areas.
  • Continuous Blasting Machine: Designed for automated, high-production applications where components pass continuously through the blasting system.

For selecting the right shot blasting machine, consider the component size and weight, part geometry, production quantity, required surface finish, and whether batch or continuous processing is required.

Shot Blasting vs. Sand Blasting - What's the Difference?

Shot blasting uses a centrifugal wheel's kinetic energy to throw abrasive; sand blasting relies on compressed air to propel it through a nozzle. Shot blasting is generally faster and more cost-effective for high-volume foundry and fabrication work, while sand blasting offers more portability and control for on-site or smaller jobs. See our sand blasting machine for that comparison in detail.

Shot Blasting Machine Price

Shot blasting machine price starts from around ₹4 lakh and depends heavily on machine type (rotary table, tumblast, swing table, or spinner hanger shot blasting machine), capacity, and automation level - see our Rotary Barrel, Tumblast, Spinner Hanger, and Conveyor model pages for specific pricing.
